250 Miles/Gallon Car

20 October 2008 No Comment

A team of mechanical engineering students of RV College of Engineering, Bangalore, has designed and developed  a car that does almost 250 miles to a gallon in test conditions. They have achieved this by making the car  aero-dynamic and extremely light weight. The car has a a low power 97 cc generator engine of two horse power.

They are calling this Project Garuda. Thier aim is to build a super milage single person car. Their plan is actually a  single person 4 wheeler. This is for the extra safety provided by the four wheels. The driver is placed in a reclining position for better lumbar support than a two wheeler.

The prototype ways around 55 kg. The cost for producing this prototype came to around 10000$. That is not the production cost but the total cost including the R&D for the same. The production cost for such a vehicle would be way below current norms.

They have only reached the initial stage and it will take a lot more time before it actually materialises. With escalating fuel prices and dwindling fuel reserves we should be looking for such alternatives to replace our gas guzziling 4WD. Such small vehicles will not only reduce per person fuel consumption but will also have lower emitions.

What ever comes the best alternative is to walk to work or ride a bycycle.
