Some companies do claim that a majority of their bottles are recycled or disposed of in a safe manner. They have no control over this, what they have control over is the source of the plastic or the type of plastic they utilise for manufacturing this bottle. Added to this we should realise that this is a multi billion dollar industry that is booming even at this time of financial crisis.

Thames Water the UK water supply company has taken the tough decision and  decided to make people  go green. They are introducing their campaign to make people use their mains water which they claim emits only around 0.0003kg of CO2. This carbon footprint is around 600 times smaller than what is  emitted by the popular bottled water brands. They are thus launching a campaign called Tap.

“Bottled water is a symbol of our disposable lifestyle at its daftest. It seems crazy that people buy water when they have a cheap and safe source at home” says an NGO.

They have created the Tap bottles to give people a smart alternative. The bottles are carbon neutral and can be re-used repeatedly for almost four years. They are made from a new kind of plastic called Tritan, which doesn’t leach the chemical Bis-phenol A that has caused so many safety concerns in America and other countries. The makers claim each part of the bottle is fully recyclable once it has outlived its use.

This model is valid world over because on average 1000 liters of mains water will cost equivalent to just 2 liter of bottled water. In these times of economic fragility such small steps could help the public at large. Thus more than the green nature of this endeavour it also has economic advantages.
